Wood is an economical and renewable building resource, used by man for millennia for many purposes, including boats, buildings, furniture, ships, tools, weapons, etc. Wood has been an important construction material since humans began building shelters, and remains in plentiful use today. Construction wood is commonly known as timber or lumber. Wood may be broken down and be made into chipboard, engineered wood, hardboard, medium-density fibreboard (MDF), or oriented strand board. However, untreated wood is subject to attack by insects, micro-organisms, fungi and other forms of decay. Wood preserving products are commonly used to treat wood to protect it from its natural predators and ensure long-term structural performance.
