Tanners specialize in tanning leather and tanning hides. Tanning is a process in which the hide of an animal is treated with tannins. Tanning prevents the hide from decomposing. Tanners use vegetable tannins, animal tannins or chemical tannins to tan hides. Some tanners and tanned hide manufacturers are small companies while others are larger leather manufacturing firms. The most commonly tanned hide in the United States is cow hide which is tanned to make leather and suede. Some tanners also tan the hides of other animals such as water Buffalo, North American bison, elk, and deer. Most tanners just produce the tanned hides, leathers and suede pelts that are then sold to clothing manufacturers or upholstery companies. Some tanning companies use a variety of tanning techniques while others stick to just one.
